What subjects should I take in IB if I want to do Law in the future?
What subjects should I take in IB if I want to do Law?
If you are part of the same school I have, and probably still am, attending, then you must know that the IBDP program requires 6 subjects where 3 of them are taken at Higher Level (HL), and 3 at standard level (SL). The combination of subjects you take narrows down your options in the future, including your future career path. Most universities offering law courses do not have subject requirements except taking English at a Higher Level (HL). Other than that, it is recommended to take essay writing subjects which include eristic abilities and argumentation. Subjects like this include History (quite recommended) or psychology. Other than that, if you are already looking to pursue commercial or corporate law it would always be a good idea to take economics or business as a subject as you will be doing a bit of both in the future.
Some universities require math aa instead of math ai (analysis and interpretations) so it would be a good idea to take math aa (analysis and approaches) instead. However, if math isn’t your forte or favorite subject and you would rather save time and energy for other subjects instead, you are (of course) allowed to take math ai.
I would recommend students to take biology at an SL level as well as it includes a lot of memorization, something law students have to be able to do in their future university course. Unless you are very passionate about another science biology is definitely something I would recommend however maybe not as a HL subject as it can be quite exhaustive (HL students for biology have double the amount of content SL students have)
Not all schools offer this subject, in fact, our school doesn’t, but taking psychology as a subject is also recommended due to its essay writing nature and the fact that many debating skills are required from it.
Law requires good analytical, writing, and reading abilities. Try to choose the subjects you enjoy and that you are good at to get the highest possible IB score, however, also try to keep this in mind and choose subjects which would allow you to practice and perfect these skills.
